2 We all absolutely must:  Observe safety rules & regulations  Apply health and safety standards when using products & materials  Operate equipment safely THE ART OF SAFETY IN COMM TECH How can we stay safe and keep our equipment sage in the classroom?

3 You + Your Computer: A Lesson in Sitting  Position the top of the monitor at eye level.  Place the monitor an arm’s length away.  Fingers are relaxed with wrists straight.  Head is neutral, chin parallel to the ground.  Back rests comfortably against the backrest of the chair.  Elbows are bent at 90 o, close to the body.  Adjust the backrest height so the lumbar support rests at low back.  Adjust the height of the chair so the knees and hips are at 90 o.  Feet flat on the ground or on a footrest as an alternate position. 4 The Art of Safety in Comm Tech RESPECT YOUR SENSES. Your Eyes: You’ll Want to See When You’re Older  Avoid staring at the computer for too long; give your eyes a break every 20 minutes.  Where sunglasses when you’re setting up studio lighting. Your Ears: You’ll Want to Hear When You’re Older  Don’t max out your headphones or speakers.  You’ll damage your hearing permanently if you listen to your music or audio tracks too loudly.

5 Stay Off the Floor: Slips, Trips, + Falls Prevent slipping by:  Not spilling anything.  If you do spill something, TELL THE TEACHER first before cleaning it up. They will decide how to clean it up, especially if equipment is involved. Prevent tripping by:  Not leaving things like backpacks on the floor.  Leaving cables across the floor. Cables must be wrapped and kept off the floor. If cables run across the studio, they must be taped. THE ART OF SAFETY IN COMM TECH

6 Stay Off the Floor: Slips, Trips, + Falls Prevent falling by:  Wearing proper footwear.  Keeping your feet on the floor at all times. Do not climb on desks or chairs. THE ART OF SAFETY IN COMM TECH

7  No fluids near equipment.  Return all equipment to its proper place; always remember to sign in and sign out.  Don’t force plugs or SD cards. If something isn’t working, tell the teacher immediately. THE ART OF SAFETY IN COMM TECH THE EQUIPMENT NEEDS LOVE TOO

8 The Art of Safety in Comm Tech ELECTRICAL SAFETY Cables  Don’t overcrowd outlets.  Don’t pull power cables out, and keep chords off the floor or taped down.  Wear proper protective gear (goggles, gloves, shoes) when dealing with wires and cables; don’t burn yourself. Lights  Be careful areound heated lights and gels.  Don’t change the lightbulbs, they easily shatter; ask the teacher first.

9 Understanding Hazardous Material: WHMIS These symbols identify hazardous materials that could seriously harm you and those around you. THE ART OF SAFETY IN COMM TECH

10  All digital assets found online must be sited appropriately as per Creative Commons.  Don’t be a troll; respect your fellow internet citizens (real life citizens, too).  Follow the school board safe internet use policy.  Maintain your privacy and do not release personal information. THE ART OF SAFETY IN COMM TECH INTERNET USE IN THE CLASSROOM
