5 Course Description Pre-departure orientation course; 30 days; 11 cities Experience Spanish history and culture through language Linguistic variations as they relate to Spain’s sociolinguistic history

6 Course Topics Students will study 4 main topics:  Dialectology  Phonology  Phonetics  Sociolinguistic History

7 Dialectology: - the systematic study of dialects and dialectal variations - study morphology (structure) and lexicology (meaning) Phonology: - how sounds are organized and used in languages - significant phonetic contrasts and how these sounds are interpreted by the native speaker ex: c, z, y s; seseo/ceceo

8 Phonetics: -The production and classification of all speech sounds (physical properties) -Specific variations in different speech communities Sociolinguistic History: -the study of language in human society -how, why, and where different dialects exist in Spain

9 Course Requirements There are three main components to the course: 1. Pre-departure orientation class 2. Travel Journal 3. Research Project

10 Pre-departure Orientation Meets once weekly from the date of registration for 2 hours Spanish dialectology, the geography of Spain, and sociolinguistic history of the country General phonetic variations Travel logistics and get to know each other

11 Travel Journal A guided journal Address the following questions in each destination: 1. What have you learned about the language in this city and how does it compare to your prior knowledge and experience? 2. What specific aspects of the language are unique to this city (phonetic, morphological, and lexical)? How do these aspects reflect and define the city’s culture and people? Conduct and record interviews with the locals, and find linguistic variation in local media

12 Research Project 1.Choose a topic relating to dialectal variation or sociolinguistic influence in a particular city or region of Spain 2.“Experts:” Research topic during orientation course 3.Outline: One-page outline; 20 copies to Spain. 4.Present: Share outline and present to group 5.Final essay: Combine research
