HINARI Training Material
HINARI website training subpage available at quarterly updated training material online All the material can be downloaded from the training page – either PowerPoint presentations or Word documents The short PowerPoint Presentation is a overview of the HINARI training material. Due to changes of the participants’ websites, the modules updated regularly and posted quarterly on the HINARI Training page. For example, in June 2010, PubMed significantly changed Advanced Search/History and the Clinical Queries web pages. In April 2012, PubMed changed Filters and, in June 2012, HINARI’s interface changed significantly.

Additional access is from a Training Materials link on the HINARI Access the content page.
To access the HINARI training material, you do NOT need to login to HINARI. While a large majority of the training material pertains to HINARI only, there are a number of modules that could be used in broader training situations - Authorship Skills, WHO Resources, BabelMeSH, Health Information on the Internet, E-Resources and Internet Searching, Information Literacy plus more.
5
We have displayed the Training Modules section of the HINARI training page. Modules 1-7 comprise the majority of information used in the extensive ‘train the trainers’ workshops. Module 4 contains 6 different sections on all the facets of HINARI/PubMed including BabelMeSH. Module 7 contains several modules on underutilized or new material available via HINARI (Evidence-based practice resources for HINARI users, E-books available for HINARI users, CINAHL).
6
This second display from the HINARI page highlights many of the resources for Brief Training including the Short Course PowerPoint Presentation and, in the ‘Training Tools’ section, HINARI – the basics 2 page Word document and HINARI Access Problems and Solutions PowerPoint presentation. Also note the Authorship Skills section. This last group modules was developed after requests from participants in workshops and can be a separate one-day course.

HINARI ‘Short Course’ 3-4 hour course
PowerPoint presentation for training Accompany Word document with exercises We will highlight several of the training modules initially starting with the HINARI ‘Short Course’ PowerPoint presentation. This is a valuable resource for training users at your institution. If time is limited for a specific group, you can teach this course in two sessions or condense it further. If at all possible, do the training in a computer training room where the participants can complete the hands on exercises. Remember – you can tailor (edit) each training session to the group’s needs.

Problem Solving Tools HINARI Access Problems and Solutions PowerPoint Presentation HINARI Printing, Copying, Saving and ing Articles Problems and Solutions PowerPoint Presentation HINARI Payments The Basics PowerPoint Presentation These presentations have been developed to answer recurring problems. Of particular use is the ‘Access Problems and Solutions’ material as it is a step-by-step review of what to do when a user cannot access a full-text article. At times, there is a mistake by the user while, other times, the problem is caused by a difficulty at HINARI. This is another document that should be printed and placed near the computer workstations.

` The next 4 slides discuss IMARK, a set of self-paced e- learning modules on information and knowledge management developed by an international partnership led by FAO. It is a valuable resource to learn about strategies, methodologies and tools for the effective management of information, and it compliments the HINARI training material. The url is listed at the top. IMARK is a Food and Agricultural Organization project in collaboration with over 30 partner and contributing organizations. The material is organized in a series of modules available either online or as CD-ROMs. If you have bandwidth problems, we suggest ordering the CD-ROM versions. Many of the modules have been updated in 2010.
22
This slide is an overview of how each Resource Kit is constructed and used. Log in is required but is free. Regarding the needs of information professionals, IMARK covers several major subject areas in agricultural information management. IMARK seeks to provide an interactive self-paced learning environment addressing each area in which information professionals can learn new concepts, approaches and attitudes for effective information management. All of the material is relevant for information professionals in other science disciplines.
23
` This module would be of particular interest to HINARI users as it discusses Digital Libraries, Repositories and Documents. Besides the Digital Libraries, Repositories and Documents module, IMARK also has material on Web 2.0 and Social Media for Development, Networking in Support of Development, Building Electronic Communities and Networks and Investing in Information for Development. These topics would be useful for information professionals in health-related disciplines.
24
Users can obtain free CD-ROM versions of all the modules from FAO.
When completing this order form, make sure you fill in all the Obligatory Fields including your address.

` ` We briefly will review the Training Activities and Materials of INASP. This U.K. based ngo has developed numerous information literacy training courses that also would compliment the HINARI training material. The url is listed at the top. This slide lists the training workshop programmes and associated materials available from INASP. Note that most of the INASP workshops and training materials are designed for traveling/participatory workshops and you can use/adapt the material for training at your institution. INASP is the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications whose goal is to work with partners to support global research communication through innovation, networking and capacity strengthening, focusing on the needs of developing and emerging countries.
26
This slide is a sampling of the material available via the INASP website. The topics range from PC Troubleshooting to Promotion of Information Literacy and Publishing Workshops. We have displayed a portion of the 20+ modules available from INASP. By clicking on a specific module, you will open a page with a description of the course plus links to the downloadable full-text documents. To download documents, you must login after completing the free registration process.
27
Note the topics listed on the Publishing Workshops page – that would compliment the HINARI Authorship Skills Modules. `
28
` ` AuthorAID provides networking, mentoring, resources and training for researchers from developing countries. For some options, individuals are required to register but it is free. The url is listed at the top. On the initial AuthorAID page, there are tabs to information About the program, News and Updates, Find Researchers, Training and Events and the Resource Library. Besides the Resource Library, an invaluable feature (Find Researchers) is the ability to link with researchers who will mentor individuals in developing and emerging countries. This includes reviewing papers before they are submitted for publication.
29
We have opened the Resource Library
We have opened the Resource Library. In English, there are 144 resources listed in the all topics category. Review the various topics listed in the drop down menu. Note: the keyword search engine and also that the resources are available in 7 different languages. ` As noted in the text box, this is a partial list of the resources available in English. In December 2010, there were 262 resources with many available in 6 other languages besides English. If you have time, open this website and browse the list in the Resource Library. You will find numerous full-text documents (primarily PowerPoint presentations) that could be of use to you as a trainer.
