3  Take out your completed preposition homework and work with one or two other people to check your work.  Mary will circulate around the room, check off your homework, and answer questions.  More questions? See Mary after class.

4  Verbs give life to a sentence. Reflect for a moment on what you can recall about verbs. Jot down a list of what you remember.  Work with one or two other folks and compare notes. Put your lists together.  Class discussion: What is a verb? How can you spot a verb when you see one?

5  What is a verb? An action word or a word of being (to be) This does not mean, however, that all action words are verbs. Running water filled our basement. ADJECTIVE (modifies the meaning of water) Running (To run) is his favorite form of exercise. NOUN (acts as the subject of the sentence) John was running to the store when he dropped his wallet. (VERB, part of the verb of the sentence)  How can you spot a verb when you see one?

6  Handout & Workshop 1. Identify and remove all prepositional phrases 2. Change the tense of the sentence WITHOUT CHANGING THE WORDING. The verb will be the only word to change. 3. Trickiness, of course, is always a problem in more complex sentences.

9  Find the verbs and their subjects in the preposition exercise.  Finding Verbs & Their Subjects in Sentences Feel free to do this assignment with your study partners.  Reading response blueprint and first draft.  Study for a quiz on the library lesson.  Read & lightly annotate Chap. 2, p.9-13
