Day One: Thursday, January 22, 2015 Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt---For this prompt, you will work individually and then do a group-share. We will be working with an assigned primary document relating to European imperialism in Africa. You will be using your Causes of Imperialism Graphic Organizer Notes to help analyze your assigned primary document and answer the corresponding questions. Primary Documents: a)British Imperialism----Cecil Rhodes Political Cartoon b)Belgian Imperialism---Political Cartoon c)Humanitarian Goals---“The White Man’s Burden” Poem d)Social Darwinism----Pears’ Soap Advertisements Steps: You will examine and analyze the primary document assigned to you. Answer the corresponding questions. Then you will be broken up into groups, and each individual will provide a summary of their primary source and relate it to the specific cause of imperialism as review and clarification.

Day One: Thursday, January 22, 2015 Class: Based upon what we have studied up until this point and your own knowledge of colonial events from American History, what changes do you think the European imperialists brought to Africa? Why?----Record class predictions on board. Class: To help introduce us to the effects of imperialism on Africa, we are going to watch two film clips. As we watch, you should be taking notes in the provided graphic organizer that is labeled Notes from Film Clips. Film Clips: United Streaming Film Clip: We are going to watch the film clip entitled “European Imperialism in Africa”. It has a running time of four minutes. This can be watched through the teacher page where it is uploaded. You Tube Film Clip: We are going to watch an excerpt from the BBC Documentary on the Belgian Genocide. The excerpt is entitled “Congo-The Brutal History”. It has a running time of 9:47 minutes.

Day One: Thursday, January 22, 2015 Class: The teacher is going to begin the Imperial Empires, Resistance, and Effects Lecture. This lecture will cover the following topics in the graphic organizer: Topics Covered: Indirect Rule Direct Rule Berlin Conference African Resistance Negative Effects Positive Effects Homework: Continue to follow the chunking for the Imperialism Editorial and work on your Africa Unit Study Guide for the midterm. Your Imperialism Pre-Write Organizer will be checked tomorrow for Class Participation Points!

Day Two: Friday, January 23, 2015 Class: The teacher is going to finish the PowerPoint Lecture, and you should continue to take notes in the provided graphic organizer. Homework: Continue to follow the chunking for the Imperialism Editorial and work on your Africa Unit Study Guide for the midterm.

Day Three: Thursday, January 29, 2015 Groups: Using the Jigsaw Method, you will be assigned certain European countries to research using the textbook and CLASS SET of the Colonial Empires PowerPoint and complete your parts of the graphic organizer. You will be teaching the material to other classmate’s tomorrow. Resources: Online Textbook: pages 692-697. Class Set of Colonial Empires PowerPoint Topics: In your groups, you will be assigned one of the following to research and take notes on: a)British Colonial Empire b)French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish Colonial Empires c)Belgian Congo Homework: You are to continue to follow the chunking for the Imperialism Editorial. Have your notes done for the next class period’s group-share.

Day Four: Friday, January 30, 2015 Groups: You will break back into your groups, and you have the class period to teach each other the content and make sure all the graphic organizer parts are complete. Homework: You are to continue to follow the chunking for the Imperialism Editorial.
