Hawaii was once an independent kingdom. (1810 - 1893) The flag was designed at the request of King Kamehameha I. It has eight stripes of white, red and blue that represent the eight main islands. The flag of Great Britain is emblazoned in the upper left corner to honor Hawaii's friendship with the British.

Linda Lingle (born Linda Cutter; June 4, 1953) is the 6 th and current governor of Hawaii. She was sworn in for a second term as Governor on December 4, 2006. Lingle holds a number of distinctions: first Republican elected governor of Hawaii since the departure of William F. Hawaii was a native kingdom throughout most of the 19th century, when the expansion of the sugar industry (pineapple came after 1898) meant increasing U.S. business and political involvement. In 1893, Queen Liliuokalani deposed, and a year later the Republic of Hawaii was established with president Sanford B Dole. Following annexation (1898), Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900. One thinks of Hawai`i and their thoughts will usually include an image of Waikiki Beach. This is basically a two mile stretch of coast fronted by hotels and tourism related facilities and the very beautiful Kapiolani Park.

Honolulu is the capital of the Hawaii, a state that is part of the United States of America.
