The Computer Environment What is it? The computer environment is the space and elements that you use to be able to work on a computer. This includes Hardware: computer, cards, peripherals cables Software: operating system, application software Networks: Wireless, Bluetooth, LAN, WAN, 3G

Computer Maintenance For the Computer Environment to work well, it needs to be maintained This accomplished by: Understanding how the computer manages its environment Understanding how to maintain the environment Understanding the threats to the environment

Managing the Environment Organizing your files Computers are very good at collecting large amounts of information known as data They accomplish this by storing data in mass storage devices All data or information is stored in files Files are made of different types depending upon the software application it is saved on Example: word file is saved as.docx Files can be organized in many different ways It will be up to you to decide what is the best way to organize your files

Organizing Files Naming Files Always give your files meaningful names Never save files using the default name Doc1.docx Never us generic names Try to keep file names short – although that is not necessary Creating File folders Create folders to keep files organized Folders can be created to keep files of the same type or files related to a specific topic.

Managing Files Managing your files means being able to organize your files in a specific way This is accomplished by performing certain operations. Most common file management operations Copy Move Delete Rename

File Management: Copy To copy a file from one location to another location Click on the Folder icon and select the folder/file with mouse Select File/Folder you wish to move Select Copy form Edit Menu Or press shortcut key CTRL C Go to new location Select Paste from Edit menu Or press shortcut key CTRL V

File Management: Move To copy a file from one location to another location Click on the Folder icon and select the folder/file with mouse Select File/Folder you wish to move Select Cut from Organize drop down menu Or press shortcut key CTRL X Go to new location Select Paste from Organize menu Or press shortcut key CTRL V

File Management: Delete To copy a file from one location to another location Click on the Folder icon and select the folder/file with mouse Select File/Folder you wish to move Select Cut form Edit Organize Or press shortcut key CTRL X Or press Delete button

File Management: Rename To rename file Select file you want to rename Select File/Folder you wish to move Select Rename from Organize menu Rename the file
