EPA Data Management Tools WasteWise and data management tool Re-TRAC Energy Star and Portfolio Manager
3
What is WasteWise? WasteWise is a free, voluntary EPA partnership program. WasteWise helps organizations eliminate costly waste through waste reduction practices — benefiting the organization’s bottom line and the environment. WasteWise is flexible. 3
4
Who Can Join WasteWise? Any type of organization can join. Currently, there are more than 3000 partners and endorsers in WasteWise from more than 50 sectors. Registration is simple and available online. www.epa.gov/epawaste/partnerships/wastewise/join.htm 4
5
Healthcare WasteWise Partners In New England, there are currently 29 active hospital (and VA Medical Centers) locations / partners. Hospitals are usually under “Medical Services” category In addition, Partners Healthcare System recently registered as a Partner but is not active yet.
6
Re-TRAC Database Partners can track activities and input data all year long Re-TRAC is designed to be an interactive tool—not just for end-of-year reporting Provides tangible benefit to Partners for improved data management 6
7
Re-TRAC Database Partners can report data for multiple locations –Ex: ACME Paper can report activities in their VA, MD, and DC offices –Need to have at least one location –Climate Profile report sums the data for all locations 7
8
Re-TRAC Database Numerous materials are pre-loaded for reporting –Synchronized with EPA’s WARM model –Ability to add “Other” when material is not on the list 8
9
Re-TRAC Database Access to Re-TRAC reports with real-time data –Re-TRAC offers several valuable reports –Climate Profile available immediately after EPA reviews annual data –Historical data comparisons 9
10
Re-TRAC Database Support resources for partners –Screen casts online –FAQs online –Helpline 10
11
Individualized Climate Profile Calculates greenhouse gas emissions reductions resulting from waste prevention and recycling activities. Translates these into real-life equivalents. Valuable tool for communicating environmental benefits to management, employees, customers, and other stakeholders. 11

13
WasteWise Partner Commitments Register to join the WasteWise Program online via Re-TRAC Database. Submit baseline data online and within 60 days of registration. Report annual progress via Re-TRAC. 13
14
EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge The Food Recovery Challenge, part of the Sustainable Materials Management Program, challenges participants to reduce as much of their food waste as possible — saving money, helping communities, and protecting the environment.food waste Website http://www.epa.gov/wastes/conserve/smm/foodrecover y/index.htm

15 A voluntary partnership with EPA ENERGY STAR is… A strategic approach to energy management
16
Benchmarking is Key to a Successful Energy Program Heighten awareness of energy use Identify billing errors Assess effectiveness of current operations, policies, practices Document environmental stewardship and demonstrate success More responsive management through more informed decision-making
17
ENERGY STAR The Cheapest, Cleanest energy is the energy you do not use You can’t manage what you don’t measure Every $1 a nonprofit healthcare organization saves on energy is equivalent to $20 in new revenues for hospitals or $10 for medical offices.
18
Portfolio Manager Attributes Track performance Energy & water meters for a single facility Review historical data or before/after major upgrades or O&M Weather normalized Source energy and energy intensity (EUI) Compare Average EUI for your space category to your performance over time Group similar buildings together for benchmarking comparison View percent improvement Verify and track results ($$ and CO 2 )

Set Priorities Across Portfolios National Average EUI 1 Ratable 50 75 25 Best investment opportunities are in lower quartiles, where there is the greatest potential for improvement. Invest O&M improvements will yield savings and label candidates. Tune Reward & Learn High scoring buildings provide lessons learned and label candidates. Non-Ratable 100Low EUI High EUI

Top 25% of energy- efficient buildings nationwide. Use 35% less carbon dioxide and 35% less energy than their peers, on average Building Recognition

New England Healthcare Facilities are Using Energy Star As of September 2011: - 251 New England hospital accounts have benchmarked energy performance using Portfolio Manager State breakdown: CT-52, ME-31, MA-108, NH-23, RI-8, VT-29 Benchmarking is the first step toward improving energy performance
24
New England hospitals that have earned ENERGY STAR Labels As of March 2012 –Children's Hospital Boston @ Waltham (Labeled in 2012) –Greenwich Hospital, CT (Labeled in 2011, 2010) –St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, ME (Labeled in 2010, 2009) –Eastern Maine Medical Center, ME (Labeled in 2010) –St. Francis, CT (Labeled in 2008, 2006, 2003) –VA West Haven, CT (Labeled in 2007, 2006 and 2002 ) –VA Jamaica Plain, MA (Labeled in 2003)

Energy Star Portfolio Upgrade! During the spring of 2013, EPA will release a complete upgrade for its popular Portfolio Manager tool. This tool, currently in use by more than 40,000 individual accounts to measure, track, assess, and report on the energy and water performance of more than 250,000 commercial buildings, will get the full treatment: a new interface, streamlined functionality, and improved usability.
