PISCATAWAY SCH. BD. V. TAXMAN A case involving racial discrimination In 1989, the school board of Piscataway, NJ had to lay off workers (which worked in reverse-seniority) However, the school board faced the issue that Sharon Taxman, a white teacher and Debra Williams, an African-American teacher, both started work on the same day, giving them equal seniority. Taxman was laid off and complained to the EEOC saying that the board had violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Third Circuit ruled in favour of Taxman but civil rights groups provided money to the school board so that a settlement could be reached when applied to the US Supreme Court (Civilrights.org/monitor/vol9_no2_3/art1.html)
