Objectives and background: Sleep disorders are commonly underdiagnosed and are significant source of concern in the geriatric population. The aim of this study is to estimate the burden of sleep disorders in the elderly population in a rural area of Central Greece. Materials and methods: In November 2014 the Greek version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was handed over by the research team in 191 persons over 65 years of age from city of Farsala (Central Greece). The prevalence of sleep disorders was investigated using the PSQI, and additional information regarding age, gender, height, weight, and medical history were also collected during an interview. Morbidity was divided 11 subcategories, while medical treatment was also categorized into 15 drug groups.

Poor sleep quality was found in 111 persons (58.1%), 76 women and 31 men. The incidence was 66.7% in the female population and 40.3% among men. Hypertension was found in 68.5%, dyslipidemia in 38.7%, coronary artery disease in 30.9%, diabetes mellitus in 13.1%, COPD in 12.6%. Conclusion: The morbidity pattern of the elderly population of the area under study does not differ from the expected one, according to bibliography. Sleep disorders are very common in the elderly, and our results are in agreement with previous reports.
