Photosynthesis -Start a New Page -Add it to your TOC

Warm- Up  Draw the following (about ½ the page) (Quickly! It does not have to be perfect – just get the idea down.)  Place the pictures on the correct side of the reaction. (think about what you already know about plants) COMES OUT GOES IN

Chemical Equation for Photosynthesis carbon dioxide + water +  glucose + oxygen Photo = light Synthesis = combining parts to make something Photosynthesis = combining water and carbon dioxide (with the help of the sun) to make sugar! REACTANTSPRODUCTS

Questions 1.Where do plants “get” the reactants? (3-part an swer) a)Sunlight - b)Water – c)Carbon Dioxide – 2.Where in the cell does photosynthesis take place? (Hint: see Figure 1 on pg. 94)

Importance of Photosynthesis: 1. FOOD Produces food for almost all organisms. – Challenge – Challenge – Can you think of a food that is NOT somehow traced back to a plant? 2. “FRESH” AIR Removes carbon dioxide from, and adds oxygen to, the atmosphere.

Photosynthesis Song

Respiration -Start a New Page -Add it to your TOC

Warm- Up  Draw the following (about ½ the page) (Quickly! It does not have to be perfect – just get the idea down.) (Draw any Animal)  Make an inference – place the pictures below on the correct side of the reaction. (this is just to get you thinking… it is okay to be wrong!) COMES OUT GOES IN

Chemical Equation for Respiration oxygen + glucose  carbon dioxide + water + ENERGY (ATP) Respiration = the process of breaking down glucose (in the presence of oxygen) to make ATP ENERGY! REACTANTS PRODUCTS

Questions 1.Where do cells“get” the reactants? (2-part answer) a)Glucose (Sugar) – b)Oxygen – 2.Where in the cell does respiration take place? (Hint: see Figure 2 on pg. 95)

Importance of Respiration: ENERGY (ATP) is like the fuel of the cell. ENERGY (ATP) allows cells to build and move things around to keep the organism alive. Remember, ALL living things need and use ENERGY (ATP).

What’s the Connection? Look over the diagram on pg. 96 and read the FIRST paragraph on pg. 97, then answer this question:  What is the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration? Next we will draw the cycle to show this connection.

Photosynthesis Respiration Mitochondrion Chloroplas t Water (H 2 0) + Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) Oxygen (0 2 ) + Glucose/Sugar (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) ATP ENERGY SUN (Light Energy) Draw it (Use the whole page – sideways?) Photosynthesis

Draw and complete (whole page): PhotosynthesisRespiration Reactants (all) Products (all) *Major Product* Organism Type (plant, animal, or both) Where in Cell

Respiration (the whole truth!)  Since plants AND animals have living cells, they both need to do respiration to make energy for those cells.  Plants just make the food that their cells eat! COMES OUT GOES IN OR

Answers PhotosynthesisRespiration Reactants (all) Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) Water (H 2 O) Sunlight Glucose (sugar) Oxygen (O 2 ) Products (all) Glucose (sugar) Oxygen (O 2 ) Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) Water (H 2 O) ATP Energy *Major Product* Glucose (sugar)ATP Energy Organism Type (plant, animal, or both) Plants onlyBoth (plants and animals) Where in Cell ChloroplastsMitochondria

Exit Slip photosynthesis 1.Write the chemical reaction for photosynthesis showing what goes in AND what comes out. respiration 2.Write the chemical reaction for respiration showing what goes in AND what comes out.
