Plant Unit Notecards
2
Why are plants important? Provide food Provide shelter Used in healing ointments Make the world beautiful Give us oxygen! Draw a picture showing what you think is the most important reason!
3
What do roots do? Anchor plant to the ground Absorb water and nutrients Draw a picture of a root.
4
What do root hairs do? Increase the surface area Absorb water and nutrients from the soil Draw a picture of root hairs absorbing water
5
Name a root we eat! Carrots Turnips Beets These are all TAPROOTS! Draw a picture of a carrot and label it as a taproot
6
What do stems do? Transport water and nutrients to leaves Support the plant Hold the plant up towards the light Draw a picture of the xylem and phloem transporting nutrients and water in the stem
7
What is Chlorophyll? Pigment in the LEAF Gives the plant a green color Turns sunlight into food Draw a picture of a leaf. Then draw green “Phyll” inside making food!
8
What does the plant do with the sugar? Transports it through the PHLOEM Draw a picture of the sugar going from the leaf, down through the phloem.
9
What is Photosynthesis? Photo = Light Synthesis= Putting Together How plants use sunlight to MAKE food Chlorophyll+ Light+CO 2 +Water = Sugar and Oxygen Draw a diagram of photosynthesis!
10
What is Respiration How the plant EATS the food Sugar+Oxygen = Energy, Water and CO 2 Draw a picture of Phyll eating food, and releasing energy!
11
What is Transpiration? When a plant releases WATER! From the roots, up the xylem, out the stomata! Draw a picture showing transpiration
12
What is pollination? When pollen is moved from an ANTHER of a stamen to the STIGMA of a pistil Can be SELF-pollinated on its own or CROSS-pollinated by a bee or other pollinator Draw a picture of cross pollination.
13
What is fertilization? When the pollen travels from the STIGMA down pollen tubes, and joins the OVULE to create an EMBRYO Draw a diagram showing fertilization
14
What is Germination When a seed GROWS into a plant Draw and label a seed, show how it grows into a plant
15
How do seeds move? Wind blows them Water carries them Carried by animals Birds eat the fruit and transport the seeds Draw a picture of one way a seed can be moved!
16
What are 2 different types of seed nutrients? Monocot Dicot
17
What is the difference between Vascular and Non-Vasular Plants? Vascular Have roots and leaves, Have tube-like structures to support the plant Have xylem and phloem Example: Trees and flowers Non Vascular Do not have roots or leaves Do not have tube- like structures Do not have xylem or phloem Example: Moss
