McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) 2- minute summary Summary This landmark case declared that the United States government had implied powers as well as those specifically listed in the Constitution. COHENS v. VIRGINIA (1821) This landmark case declared that the Supreme Court is bound to hear all cases that involve constitutional questions, and that jurisdiction is not dependent on the identity of the parties in the cases. JOHN MARSHALL-SCJ

GIBBONS v. OGDEN (1824) 2-minute summary This case set the stage for future expansion of congressional power over commercial activity and a vast range of other activities once thought to come within the jurisdiction of the states.
