infer, v. best guess about what is happening, based on the information you have √ your smiling, I infer ______ √ your frowning, I infer _____ inference, n. inferential, adj. to infer while reading – best guess about what is going on in the text by combining what the text says + what you already know “Author and You”

Inferring vs Predicting predicting is guessing what will happen in the future, what will happen next based on what you already know inferring is guessing what is happening right now, based on what the author is saying PLUS what you already know... Fact questions are – “Right There” in the text (who, what, when, where) Infer questions are – “Author and You” (compare, why, explain, etc)

The days had folded one into another and mixed so that after two or three weeks he only knew that time had passed in days because he made a mark for each day in the stone near the door to his shelter. Real time he measured in events. A day was nothing, not a thing to remember – it was just the sun coming up, the sun going down, some light in the middle. But events – events were burned into his memory and so he used them to remember time, to know and remember what happened to keep a mental journal.
