Advanced Algebra II Notes 2.2 Measures of Spread Rolling Paper Ball Experiment: Roll a ball of paper down a ramp (book) raised at a fixed angle (place some books under one end of the ramp) and onto the floor. Use a yard stick to record the distance out from the edge of the desk to where the ball first hit. Repeat this process at least 8 times.

Tries12345678 Distance 1.Use the above data and compute the mean distance of your trials. 2.On an average, how much do your data values differ from the mean? 3.How does the variability relate to how controlled your setup was? 4.Determine a way to calculate a single value that tells how accurate your group was at the collection of data. 5.Write a formula to calculate your statistic. Write it both in words and in symbols.

Standard deviation: measures the spread of your data away from the mean. This information is available in 1 variable statistics: is the population standard deviation (using all the data) Sx is the sample standard deviation (using only a sampling of the data) Deviation is the difference between a piece of data and the mean of all the data. Write the formula for Standard Deviation here:

Use the data on page 89 about Student-to- Teacher ratio and find the following: Mean and standard deviation Make a box plot of the data and identify any outliers. (An outlier is a piece of data that is more than 1.5 times the Interquartile Range (IQR) from the ends of the box.)

Assignment: page 90: 1 – 6, 9, 12, 13
