4  Major Functions Analyzed:  The UAV is controlled manually via the ground using a controller  It will relay real-time video to the ground station  It collects data like GPS coordinates and relays them to base station  First look at 3 patents with possible infringements, then look at competing products.

6  Navigating UAVs with an on-board digital camera  US Patent Application #20100004802/A1  Filing Date : 01/25/2005  Similarities  Talks about using an on-board digital camera for navigation of UAV  Doctrine of Equivalents  Significant algorithm changes, we never change “resolution of image” or focus on “required number of pixels”

7  Enabling Services on a UAV  US Patent #7509212  Filing Date : 01/24/2005  Similarities:  Outlines a method to get data like current position from a UAV  Doctrine of Equivalents  We do not use the data collected to select a “service module”/upload the module to the UAV and use it to select flight patterns etc  Infact, we have manual control throughout.

8  Robota Triton  Has the same functions as our UAV (GPS coordinates, XBEE RX/TX with base station, high res camera in payload bay, Battery management, custom software for base station, ground remote control)  Closest form to literal infringement (We do not have autopilot)  Retails for 9000$

9  Microdrone MD4-200  Similar Functions to our UAV  Remote controlled selectable (autonomous flight available)  Can be configured to take real-time video and send it back to base station  Falls under literal infringement (We do not have autopilot, no hover capability)

10  Confirm that the US Patents are no threats, if they are, change the design accordingly  As for the more serious literal infringements:  Check if Robota/Microdrone have patents on this technology  If they do, buying a license or paying royalty fees may be the only viable alternative  No such patents found yet
