Goals: Examine health risks and behaviors among freshmen Look at possible differences between first and second semester freshmen Increase awareness on campus of the issues freshmen face Increase awareness of resources on campus Identify areas where faculty and staff can assist students in their transition to college Reduce health risks and behaviors among freshmen Reporting or publishing these results without the written consent of the Department of Health Education and Promotion HLTH 1000 Survey Committee is prohibited. Distribution of the actual data set is limited to HEP faculty members.

Freshmen Health Behavior Survey Description Fall 2008: 918 - Taken in August and September Spring 2008: 919 - Taken in April Freshmen aged 18-20 HLTH 1000 classes Voluntary & anonymous online “Health Behavior Survey” The survey is administered twice annually by the Dept. of Health Education and Promotion HLTH 1000 Survey Committee. Results are used by members of the HEP faculty for course improvement, program planning and research and publication. Reporting or publishing these results without the written consent of the Department of Health Education and Promotion HLTH 1000 Survey Committee is prohibited. Distribution of the actual data set is limited to HEP faculty members.

Graphs of Fall 08 & Spring 08 data overall –Select items broke out by gender Percentage point difference between Fall and Spring listed above graphs Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel (CMH) general association (special type of chi-square) was used to test for significance differences between the fall and spring semesters while controlling for race –If significant this means there is a significant difference between the fall and spring semesters for at least one of the groups –Testing does not test for significant differences by racial group, rather it is controlling for possible differences Layout of This Presentation

Limitations Very few minorities 72 African Americans in Fall and 55 from other races Data may not be stable where there are small numbers Some behaviors are relatively rare – ex: illicit drugs, anal sex, condom use for oral sex, suicide Also a problem since there are few minorities More minorities in the spring In testing this issue was controlled for Survey does not track the same people for both semesters Reporting or publishing these results without the written consent of the Department of Health Education and Promotion HLTH 1000 Survey Committee is prohibited.
