Aims of NCETM instigated research projects To find “what works” in terms of professional development in mathematics To develop a culture of action research being part of CPD by encouraging teachers to become active researchers To produce case studies and reports through which the NCETM can communicate the messages from the research To engage teachers with research To develop communities of practice as a result of the research

What is the purpose of PD in Mathematics? Professional development is related to change, but change in what? Change in teacher’s way of working with students Change in teacher’s views about learning Change in teacher’s knowledge about mathematics Change in teacher’s knowledge about teaching and learning mathematics Change in learning processes of students Change in learning outcomes of students Change in nature of discussion/dialogue that takes place in the classroom

What constitutes evidence for effective professional development? Evidence of change in students’ learning processes/outcomes? Evidence of change in teacher’s way of working in the classroom?
