Seminar Title Nine Essential Elements of an Effective Instructor Len Sperling, MBA, CRI, CSR(A)

RESEARCH Students of Memorial University (St. John’s, Newfoundland) were asked to provide their perceptions of effective teaching, both on campus and distance instruction. Specifically, students were requested to identify and rank five characteristics of an effective instructor, explain why each characteristic was deemed important, and describe classroom behaviors demonstrating each characteristic. http://www.mun.ca/educ/faculty/mwatch/laura_treslan_SPET HE_Paper.pdf

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Ellen Smyth, Instructor, Austin Peay State University

WHY? When working with students, we should consider what students expect from us as it relates to teaching. What do students need? How do they perceive effective teaching? When an instructor exhibits traits that students consider essential, students will naturally be more open to learning from that instructor.

PURPOSE The traits in this seminar were identified by students as most essential to effective teaching. All nine traits work together to improve learning, but simply knowing them will do little. The purpose of this session is to (1) reflect on each trait as it relates to your own teaching and (2) to provide takeaways as to how we can put these traits into action to increase student learning.
