Tinkering with Inheritance By: Ashley Whetham, Ray Salinas, and Sinead Ahmed

Selective Breeding

 The selective breeding process is when you cross organisms with dominant alleles of the desired traits, when you receive the offspring, called a hybrid, it most likely has the desired traits  Organisms that can be selectively breed are: Cows which are breed for the areas they live in, or dairy/ meat cows; chickens for meat and eggs; and pigs for which type of meat you want; also they can be breed for fast metabolism or growth

Selective breeding Pros and Cons Pros 1.Helps solve the problem of world hunger by creating varieties, which will make more efficient use of scarce land. 2. Lowers the prices for the buyer Cons 1. Fast growing for the animal can result in defects 2. Not safe for the animal

Inbreeding

Inbreeding  Inbreeding is the use of the same organism with the same characteristics  Ex. Beef cows breed with beef cows  Ex. Huskies breed with huskies  Ex. Poodle breed with another poodle - all of these animals create an almost exact copy of the parents

Inbreeding pros and cons  Pros- 1. Continues on the Breed; prevents extinction 2. Keeps certain traits that you want  Cons- 1. Passes on genetic defects for the next generations to come 2. the parents can transfer unwanted characteristics to the offspring

Hybridization

 Hybridization is the process of mixing different organisms together to make the best possible organism  Organisms that are breed together Ex1. milk and beef cows mixed together to create a cow that can do both Ex2. Chickens and Hens combined to create a chicken for meat and eggs Ex3. plants that are breed for food production and disease defender traits

Hybridization Pros and Cons  Pros 1.Creates more desired traits in the new organism 2.Makes a brand new organism with new abilities  Cons 1. Creates new undesirable diseases 2. Creates undesirable mutations
