AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION Agricultural production is the science, art, or occupation concerned with cultivating land, raising crops, and feeding, breeding, and raising livestock.

HAVE YOU EVER EATEN GUMMY BEARS OR GUMMY WORMS? WHAT ARE THEY ACTUALLY MADE OF? Although many of us think that they are very tasty, you may change your mind after finding out what they are made of. Gummy candies are made from a product called gelatin. Gelatin is a protein that is made from collagen. It is made by boiling the connective tissues, bones and skins of animals and usually comes from pigs or cows. With that being said, that makes gelatin a byproduct. But what is a byproduct?

WHAT IS A BYPRODUCT? A byproduct is something that is made during the production or manufacture of something else. So a byproduct is a secondary product.

With what you know so far, get with a partner and see if you can think of any byproducts.

HOW ARE BYPRODUCTS USED BY PEOPLE? Byproducts are used by people everyday in different ways. They can be used for food, clothing, medicine, glue, silk, soap, and many other things!

EXAMPLES OF AGRICULTURAL BYPRODUCTS Pigs: Suede (a soft leather), insulin for regulation of diabetes, valves for human heart surgery, and gelatin. Sheep: Wool Cattle: Shampoos, conditioners, instrument strings, charcoal, glass Goats: Soap, paint, leather, candles Rabbits: Fur Worms: Silk Horses: Glue from the hooves Cotton: Oils, Fertilizer, Candles Trees: Toothpaste, Tires
