INTRO Transition On a piece of paper, write at least 3 things you’ve heard or read about HIV and AIDS. Motivate What is a situation in which a person might do something risky become he or she didn’t know all the facts? What could happen? What might some the negative consequences be?

TEACHING STEPS Explain In the last class you learned more about STDs. Today we’re going to be talking about HIV. What is HIV? HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It’s the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) HIV lives in semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and breast milk. It can be passed from one person to another through bodily fluids.

TEACHING STEPS Explain With the help of medicine, some people can live for a long time with HIV HIV leads to people become more sick (cold, flu, pneumonia, etc.) A person gets AIDS after the immune system can’t fight off certain diseases

TEACHING STEPS Summarize HIV is passed through infected blood, semen, and vaginal fluids. – sexually activity, sharing needles, also thru breastfeeding People don’t get HIV from day-to-day contact. – touching hugging, kissing, sharing a toilet seat You can’t tell if someone has HIV – people feel fine until symptoms show up People with HIV may have flu-like symptoms when they’re first infected. – may not show up for years You can protect yourself. – being abstinent, choosing one sexual partner, using latex condoms correctly every time
