2 Thermal energy comes from the movement of atoms and molecules in matter. It is a form of kinetic energy produced from random movements of those molecules. 3 Thermal Energy- heat and heat transfer from an object with higher energy or heat to a lower one.

5 The ultimate source of thermal energy available to mankind is the sun, the huge thermal-nuclear furnace that supplies the earth with the heat and light that are essential to life.

6 In heat transfer, conduction is the transfer of thermal energy between neighboring molecules in a substance depending on temperature. It always occurs from a region with high temperature to a lower one.

7  Examples….  Heat from a burner heating up a pot.  A spoon in a cup of hot soup becomes warmer because the heat from the soup is conducted along the spoon.  Iron, lead, copper, steel, brass, tin foil…

8 Lighting a match creates fire which is a source of thermal energy through friction.

9 Heat Transfer Popcorn kernels are heated by the radiation in the microwave, and the kernels heat up, giving off more heat to the kernels surrounding it and making it twice as warm.

10 Convection Convection is the transfer of heat by the actual movement of the warmed matter. It is the transfer of heat energy in a gas or liquid by movement of currents. –Ex: heat leaves the coffee cup as the currents of steam and air rise.

11 Thermal Insulation Can refer to materials used to reduce the rate of heat transfer. Heat energy can be transferred by conduction, convection, radiation or by actual movement of material. –Ex: clothing, buildings, space travel, automotive…

12 Heat Transfer When an object is at a different temperature than its surrounding or another object, transfer of thermal energy, also known as heat flow, occurs in such a way that the body and the surrounding reach thermal equilibrium. Ex: hugging

13 Thermal Radiation Electromagnetic radiation emitted from a material due to its heat and which depends on temperature. –Ex: household heaters, bonfire, hot metalwork from a blacksmith…

14 Heat When you put your hand over a fire you can feel the heat. You are feeling thermal heat in transfer.
