What’s “yo” Problem Man? Choose a problem What do you want to explore? Ask a question about it? This the purpose or reason for doing the experiment
2
Research: Research the problem? How can you find the answer to your question? Internet Videos Interview someone that knows a lot about the topic Books

4
Hypothesis: After you research and learn about the problem You make a prediction about how the experiment will turn out. This is a statement about what will happen. “If I do _______, then _______will happen” Independent Dependent
5
Experiment: (Peanut butter jelly) with a baseball bat This is when you test out your hypothesis Start this section off with a description of what the experiment is. Be very detailed with your description of what happens in the experiment ( Peanut Butter Activity) Homework: (in your agendas) Like we did in class write a detailed procedure on something in your life that we could do in class.
6
Homework Guidelines 1. Is the problem clearly stated under step one? 2. Are there at least two different types of research stated as step two? 3. Does the hypothesis use the two words (IF….Then)? 4. Does the hypothesis predict what they think will happen in their experiment? 5. Can you describe the experiment?
7
Warm Up: Divide a page of your interactive notebook into two sections as you did last class. Top Section: ”Homework Partner Check.” In this section I want you to answer these questions about your partner’s homework. In this section I want you to answer these questions about your partner’s homework. 1. Is the problem clearly stated under step one? 1. Is the problem clearly stated under step one? 2. 8
Experiments ? How does the homework connect with writing the experiment? (Use your example from yesterday.) How will you test your hypothesis? What data will you collect?
9
Terms used in Experiment: Controls: (things that stay the same across the experiment) Control group Vs. Experimental group Variables (see below) Independent variable Vs. Dependant variable
10
Control Group vs. Experimental Group Control Group-The group that stays the same. Experimental Group- The group that is being changed.
11
Independent Variables What you are doing. This is the solution that you are testing. Goes on the X-axis for a graph.
12
Dependent Variable The measured result. It depends or is influenced by the other variable. Goes on the Y-axis for a graph.
13
Practice with Experiments Smithers Smithers Homer Simpson Homer Simpson Homer Simpson Bart Simpson Bart Simpson Bart Simpson Krusty the Clown Krusty the Clown Krusty the Clown Lisa Simpson Lisa Simpson Lisa Simpson
14
Analysis: Collect and Organize your data. Display what happened in your experiment by making tables, charts, or graphs
15
Conclusion: This is where you accept or reject your hypothesis State your conclusion What happened? Was it expected? Did you find out what you wanted to know?
16
Applying the method: Applying the method: Problem:Research:Hypothesis:Experiment:Analysis:Conclusion:
17
Helicopter Activity: Problem: “How can we make the helicopter fly to the ground the fastest?” *Use all of the steps of the Scientific Method in order to solve the problem of the activity and display your findings.
18
Soda and Mintos Experiment Divide class into groups and allow them to construct an experiment with the soda and mintos. Students’ task is to utilize the six steps of the Scientific Method to design and conduct an experiment. They must complete a write up that applies each step of the Scientific Method to their design.
