Essential Question: How did our new nation grow?

Vocabulary: Manufacturer -people who use machines to make goods Corps -a team of people who work together Interpreter -someone who helps people who speak different languages understand each other Source -the place where a river begins

A New President Thomas Jefferson became President of the United States in 1801. He was our third President.

Political Parties When Jefferson was elected, the Federalist party, headed by President John Adams, believed that our national government should be stronger than the state government, and should help manufacturers. They gave up power to the Democratic- Republican party. Jefferson, a Democratic- Republican, believed that state governments should be stronger than the federal government and he wanted to help farmers. During his years in office, the country grew in size.

How did the country grow in size? First- Jefferson made the national government smaller by lowering taxes and decreasing the size of the army.

The second event that happened while Jefferson was President was called the Louisiana Purchase

Have you ever spent more money than you had permission to spend? More money than allowed was spent on the Louisiana Purchase.

Louisiana Purchase The biggest port in Louisiana was the port of New Orleans. Farmers wanted to ship their products down the Mississippi River to Louisiana, which was owned by France. In 1802, President Jefferson sent representatives to France to see if farmers could use the port.

Napoleon Bonaparte was the ruler of France. He needed money to go to war against Great Britain. He sold all of Louisiana Territory to the United States. *The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States.

What is out there? Jefferson wanted to know more about the Louisiana Territory. He asked Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition to explore the west.

Lewis and Clark Expedition Jefferson asked Lewis and Clark to do these three things: 1. Gather information about the land, plants, animals and weather. 2.Study the cultures of the Western Indians 3. Look for a water route to the Pacific Ocean by way of the Missouri and Columbia Rivers.

Lewis and Clark expedition: Lewis and Clark and more than 30 people left St.Louis, Missouri in 1804. Their group was called the Corp of Discovery. Sacagawea, an American Indian, was the wife of the group’s interpreter.

No water route The Corp of Discovery returned from their expedition after two years. They did not find a water route to the Pacific but brought back journals full of notes about the land and people

Zebulon Pike Zebulon Pike led a group to find the source of the Mississippi River. He explored Missouri and then went north to Minnesota. He learned about the land but did not find the river’s source.

More exploration: One year later, Pike explored the Arkansas and Red Rivers that run through the southern part of the Louisiana Territory.

A Way West Lewis and Clark proved that it was possible to cross the continent through the Rocky Mountains. The discoveries of Lewis and Clark and Pike led the way for traders and other pioneers.

Essential Question: How did our new nation grow?

Growth of Our Nation: The purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France, doubled the size of the United States. It allowed the US to gain control of the port of New Orleans, which allowed them to move up and down the Mississippi River and look forward to adding more territories.
