So what’s IS6125/IS6145 all about? IS6125  Takes a technology-independent view  Conceptually modelling data What is data and why should we care? Why do we need to model it? How to create Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) How to model data in tabular terms Normalisation

So what’s IS6125/IS6145 all about? IS6126  Gets more hands-on and technology-specific  Database technologies Oracle, Access, etc. Structured Query Language (SQL) Semi-structured data and eXtensible Markup Language (XML) Unstructured data and an introduction to Hadoop

IS6125 Course Assessment  Continuous assessment: 30 marks Group report – 30 marks (c. 23 rd October) In-class exam – 20 marks (c. 4 th November)  Exam: 50 marks

IS6125 Some things to note  This is essentially a skill-building course  We’re going to have to discuss things and practice different modelling techniques to improve  As a starting point What is data?

IS6125 Some more generic things  Ask questions  Help each other  Make use of the Internet Use search engines (e.g. google) to find information on things you want to know more about If you see cases or interesting stories you think we should talk about in lectures, email me
