3 Who is Mrs. Kim?  From Maryland  Columbia  Schooling  University of Maryland, College Park  Elementary Education  Concentration in Mathematics  Work Experience  Taught 3 rd Grade in Fairfax County for 6yrs  Long Term Substitute 4 years in 3 rd Grade (Hutchison/Pinebrook/Arcola)

4 Reading A balanced or comprehensive literacy approach is used. This includes mini-lessons, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading, as well as read-alouds, literature studies, and author studies.  Scholastic Book orders will be sent home each month.  Online ordering is available  Class Code is P86JL

5 Writing  Writing Students write for many purposes with emphasis on explanatory and descriptive writing. Students also practice basic research skills, with an emphasis on information collection, summarizing, paraphrasing, and identifying resources. We follow a Writer’s Workshop approach to writing (mini-lesson, independent writing, conferencing, sharing)  Writing Rubrics (Learning Targets)  Grammar Usage, Conventions, Mechanics  Word Study Approach Discovering patterns, rules and meanings.  Cursive Writing

12 Morning Meetings  Every morning students will greet each other  Go over the schedule  Sharing Time

13 Interactive Notebooks  These notebooks will be completed using composition notebooks for each subject. They can be used for review at any time. It is a learning process and requires time and several procedures.

14  One to the World is an instructional initiative that addresses what an LCPS graduate should know and be able to do.  This instructional approach focuses on significant content and important competencies.  More information to come as the 3 rd grade team plans for future curriculum based projects.

15 Homework  Homework is a nightly 30 minute process  Reading-Silently/Read Aloud- 20 minutes  Math- as needed and assigned by teacher  Word Study done in class (HW if not completed)  Projects as assigned  Content based assignments as needed

20 Field Trips  We are permitted one field trip so far this year. Planning on going to the National Zoo in April.  Chaperones  Must complete Volunteer/Mentor Application  Epi-pens

21 Arrival/Dismissal Procedures  First bell @ 7:35 am.  Students arriving between 7:30 and 7:35 should report to the front hall until the bell rings.  Late bell is at 7:50.  Tardy Slip  Dismissal @ 2:35 - 2:45 pm.  Early dismissal procedures
