LANGUAGE RESEARCH IN SERVICE TO THE NATION Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (LREC) Overarching goal To depict the current landscape of LREC research DoD Question: Does DoD-supported LREC research reflect a shared vision and priorities with significant impact throughout the DoD? –CASL will present findings on DoD-supported LREC research. –Sustainable Solution: Proof-of-concept online collaboration tool for research, knowledge sharing, and management of DoD-supported LREC research. 2

LANGUAGE RESEARCH IN SERVICE TO THE NATION Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (LREC) Current findings “Regional expertise,” per se, is not studied –Research applies culture theory to regions ( e.g., Negotiations in the Middle East) –Human performance within context Meta-themes of culture research –Socio-cultural interaction & communication (e.g., What are key skills and attributes that Army leaders need to be effective in cross-cultural missions?) –Curricula development Training, education, simulation –Modeling 7
