Welcome Honors English 9/Interactive Media to Camp Read S’more! Mrs. Kozma – Library/Media Director Mrs. Hoots – Library/Media Assistant
2
Help Mrs. Kozma I normally start with… “There is no such thing as people who hate to read; there are only people who have not found the right book” (Frank Sarafini). You’re already readers! I need your help! So, how can you help me encourage other students at LHS to read? Studies show that students are more motivated to read books suggested by other students than they are to read books suggested by adults. Even if they’re the same book!
3
Goals Let’s create a school-wide buzz for reading by putting your book recommendations on display! We will use the Read S’more Books rating system. Find your book, insert the card, set it on the display. Learning Goals 1. Learners will recommend a great book to other LHS students. 2. Learners will find a new great book for the honors project. Maybe your new book will even be a recommendation from a classmate! Talk about books!
4
Finding great books! There are two ways to find books in the library. One – Get up, walk around, browse! Fiction (written stories about people and events that are not real) is located on the last three sets of shelves in the library. Nonfiction (Writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people) is found in the middle of the library. Nonfiction shelves are clearly marked with Dewey Decimal numbers. (Example 921’s biographies, 360’s social problems, etc.)
5
Finding great books! Rounder – New books and books on display. Pyramid – Eliot Rosewater books –Eliot Rosewater books are chosen annually by high school students throughout Indiana in grades 9-12. These are books chosen as “the best” by students just like you, not adults! Reference – REF – you will not be choosing reference books, but they are on the north wall. SC and GN – Story collections and graphic novels are located behind the circulation desk.
6
Finding great books! Two – Search from your computer then get up and walk around! We’ll try “Looking for Alaska” and “navy seals”. Let’s go to the LHS webpage and give it a try! Log in for more options. http://www.tricreek.k12.in.us/lhs/http://www.tricreek.k12.in.us/lhs/
7
Finding great books! We also have books you won’t see on the shelves such as eBooks and digital audiobooks ! You can narrow your search for eBooks by merely using the search term “eBooks”. However, we aren’t spending time on this today. Today we are getting physical books.
8
You found a great book! Once you’ve found a book (unless it’s an eBook) take it to the circulation desk to check it out! Recap Activity 1 – Recommend a book and put it on the display. Activity 2 – Find your new book! Questions? Let’s get up, walk around, and find a great book!
