First of all……

This Taster Aims … To provide a brief overview of the basics of teaching and learning, so that you feel more confident and effective in your volunteer role

Learning Outcomes By the end of this 2 hour taster session, you will: Identify the stages of the teaching & learning cycle Share at least 3 ways you could support learners at one or more of the stages Evaluate several methods of checking learning

Getting to know each other First, carry out the ice breaking activity in pairs ( 5 minutes) Discover: 1. Your colleague’s name 2. What your colleague is looking forward to (enjoying) about the volunteer role 3. Anything they are apprehensive about

Underlying responsibilities: Health and Safety Tutors – and volunters - have a duty to consider health and safety and the law in their management of the learning environment. They have a duty to preserve the health and safety of others as well as themselves.

Underlying responsibilities: Equality & Diversity Giving all learners the opportunity to attend and participate, regardless of their gender, race, ethnic origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation and age.

Underlying responsibilities: Safeguarding As a volunteer, if you suspect that a learner is experiencing – or in danger of – mis-treatment of any kind (including bullying) you have a duty to report this to your mentor/manager. Who is?

Underlying responsibilities : Confidentiality Professional behaviour regarding the security of personal information “Secret Keeping” – what you should not promise!

Deliver Do it! Teach / Support. Perhaps adapt teaching methods, resources etc while it’s in progress. Monitor and give formative feedback

Assess Have the students learned what you intended them to learn? Formal and/or information checking.
