Blood Pressure using BP cuff Fit cuff snugly around arm, slightly above elbow area Put on stethoscope, placing the bell over the brachial artery Make sure valve is twisted close Start pumping bulb to about 180-200, or when you hear no more sounds through stethoscope Instantly untwist the valve SLIGHTLY! So air can escape Watch as the meter descends; the number that you first hear a pulse is the systolic pressure (the meter should bounce/pause slightly) it’ll continue pausing per pulse beat The last pulse beat is the diastolic pressure

3. How to interpret heart rate What you’ll need: Stethoscope and a watch Place the stethoscope over the patient’s heart, find the heart beat Count how many heartbeats occur in 15 secs and multiply by 4 OR count 10 secs and multiply by 6 You can simultaneously take the resting respiration rate by counting the number of breaths for one minute by counting how many times the chest rises

4. Taking Pulse Place 2 fingers firmly over lateral side of wrist (for all of you anatomy fans, it’s the radial artery) Count how many pulses occur in 10 seconds/ multiply by 6.
