2 Background……………….. Slow start in KZN HPS promoted thru monthly meetings with Sch. Health Nurses. Developed HPS criteria /tool / IEC In 2000, 4 District officials assess schools according to Prov. criteria. 1 st Sch. Launched 9 Sept 2003- Carrisbrooke Pr. Sch.

3 Background cont…………….. 2004 HPS gains momentum with appointment of Prov. Ass.Man. Provincial HP Assessment Team est. 11 District HP forums & assessment Teams established. On going in-service training on HPS by Prov. + attendance of District officials at Winter / Summer School Courses on HPS - UWC

4 PROFILE OF HPS PROGRAMME PROVINCE / DISTRICTS Provincial level: HPS part of HP Prog. -1 Prog. Manager - 2 Assistant Managers District level: 1 Cluster Assistant Manager (manages MCWH, Nutrition & HP)District level: 1 Cluster Assistant Manager (manages MCWH, Nutrition & HP) No dedicated HPS Facilitators on District level.No dedicated HPS Facilitators on District level. HPS facilitated by different categories of Health Workers i.e EHO’s, Dieticians, Oral Hygienists, School Nurses.HPS facilitated by different categories of Health Workers i.e EHO’s, Dieticians, Oral Hygienists, School Nurses.

Ass. conducted with rep. from other Health Programmes + District officials. Status - awarded / not awarded- via Healthy Lifestyle event with the community.

6 CRITERIA / ASSESSMENT TOOL COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Is there involvement at the school? What does the community do in the school together with the school staff/ learners? Is there evidence that the School Governing Body is committed and responsible? Frequency of SGB Meetings? Record of SGB Minutes Frequency of Parent Meetings Is there a record of the number of parents attending the meetings? Is there Parent’s involvement at school? What do the parents do? NGO / CBO / FBO involvement at school. List the activities that they do? Volunteerism by parents School - Community Projects-Clean up campaigns Are there community gardens near the school or a spin off from the school? Community Leaders involvement Is there Municipality involvement?

7 POST HPS STATUS: ANNUAL EVALUATION To assess whether school activities have been linked with other health programmes e.g. Mental Health, Nutrition, Chronic Diseases, Oral Health etc. To establish if there is a profile of health problems in the school, whether it has been communicated to the local PHC facility, e.g. any physical, emotional, mental or social problem To evaluate the impact of Health Promotion in the school on the disease profile, To identify the phase/stage of the Health Clinical/Assessment process by school health teams at the school To ascertain if there is a community profile of resources at the school To establish whether the community is participating in activities at school and having their skills developed at the school

10 CASE STUDY Sokhela Pr. Sch.: Deeply rural area, no electricity, High unemployment, poverty….. OBJS – sustain PSNP, establish food garden, improve oral health, improve rain H2O harvesting, eradicate Scabies, assist learners with barriers to educ. Implementation: Needs assessment – shortage of H2O, hunger (Vit A), rabies,scabies,access to hand washing tools, no kitchen facilities, limited access to potable H20, Implementation Plan: Plans – build a Kitchen, cont. of PSNP, gutters /tanks(harvest rain H20),recycle gray H20 for use in veg. gardens + fencing, training of learners + community on veg.prod., establish pilot garden site, Scabies educ prog., Oral Health intervention, hand washing prog, & “Tippy Taps” learners with barriers identified & assisted. Linking all above to curriculum. Monitoring & Evaluation: Scabies eradicated. Rabies – Nil. Oral Health improved. Food gardens established + training on food prod. Duck / chick pilot project. Stakeholders: Oral Hygenist, Sch Health Nurse, EHP, Dept. Agriculture, Veterinary Services, Members of Community, SGB, Local Councillor, Local Municipality.

11 OPPORTUNITIES 2001 – 2006 Schools Essay Competition Pilot Project – (NAP) Nutrition & Physical Activity @ schools. Partnership with DOE growing. Collaboration with HPC (Health Promoting Clinics) Programme. Closer working relationship with local municipalities. Involvement of other Health Programmes / PHC / Community Health Component. Establishment of Sub District Teams in some Districts. KZN…..

12 CONSTRAINTS Need to strengthen & sustain partnerships No dedicated HPS facilitators on District level. High level of attrition amongst staff – constantly build capacity & train on HPS. Need standardized national HPS criteria / tool. Resources differ from District to District – some weak / others strong. Need additional staff @ Provincial level to accelerate the process / progress.

13 Future Plans = C U R E D Continue with Schools Essay Competition as entry point for HPS Use entry points for HPS-: –Malaria Control Programme –TB as entry point for HPS in eThekwini District (NDOH) Roll out NAP in all HPS schools. Establish Cluster Team to do Final HPS assessments. DOE to be supported with HPS initiative in the Schools Centres of Care & Support for sustainability.
