Today we are going to talk about how things are different today from long ago.Canada’s map has changed, land costs way more, there are more communites—even High Prairie’s been discovered and settled!

EARLY SETTLEMENT What made early settlers want to come to what is now Alberta?

Early settlers came to Alberta for the really CHEAP land! 160 acres was only $10

Father Emile Grouard used a printing press to print books in Native languages! This was the first time Native languages were ever written down! Before they only spoke their languages. DID YOU KNOW? The town of Grouard is named after him!

HOW DID NWMP PROVIDE SAFETY IN THE WEST? They brought law and order to stop the whiskey trade. They showed to western prairies that they had to follow Canada ‘s laws. They helped stop the US from taking our land.

HOW DID THE COMING OF THE RAILWAY CHANGE THE WEST? 1879 Work on the railroad begins in British Columbia and heading east. Many Chinese workers were hired. The railroad took 6 years to be built from one end of the country to the other!

HAVING THE RAILWAY FROM ON END OF THE COUNTRY TO ANOTHER -Made travel easier and faster -Communities could share goods

IN WHAT WAYS DID EARLY SETTLERS CONTRIBUTE TO WHAT IS NOW ALBERTA? They built schools, hospitals, and farms and made communities.
