Hardware Support Information Most Innovative libraries use a single physical UNIX server to support their Innovative application software, although supplementary servers are sometimes used to support specific functions. Most Innovative libraries use a single physical UNIX server to support their Innovative application software, although supplementary servers are sometimes used to support specific functions. The number of processors required per server depends on the number of application users. The majority of libraries use one or two processors, although some of the largest libraries may have as many as eight processors per server. SmartUPS Operation When Innovative's Powerwatch software communicates with a library-supplied APC SmartUPS, the communication takes place over a dedicated RS-232 serial connection between a serial port on the physical server and the serial port on the APC SmartUPS. The library must provide a suitable cable and the UNIX device name of the serial device. The library must provide a suitable cable and the UNIX device name of the serial device. Serial parameters for communication between Powerwatch and the APC SmartUPS are 2400 Baud, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit and No Parity. OS specific compilers are frequently supplied at extra cost by the system supplier, but may be available at no charge from other sources, such as the Sun Developer Network (SDN), which offers a free 'C' compiler license for download.
