Lesson 22 English 11

Today’s Agenda 1. SAT Question of the Day #7 2. Continue “Self-Reliance” 1. Read. 2. Talk to the text. 3. Make connections to Transcendentalism STUDENTS WILL MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN TRANSCENDENTAL BELIEFS AND IDEAS EXPRESSED IN EMERSON’S “SELF-RELIANCE.”

Common Errors on the SAT: Improving Sentences Section  Agreement in number – can’t have a singular modifier with a plural noun  “these (plural) kind (singular)” - WRONG  “this (sing) kind (sing)” – CORRECT  Pronoun – Antecedent agreement – pronoun that replaces the noun must agree in number with the antecedent  Use singular pronouns for singular antecedents  Use plural pronouns for plural antecedents  Diction – be sure to pick the correct word  Affect (v) and effect (n)  Eminent and imminent  Hanged (people) and hung (objects)  Parallel Structure – words, phrases, etc. must be written in the same grammatical structure  Modifiers – phrase must be in close proximity to the word it is telling more about/describing  Misplaced – word is in the sentence but in the wrong location  Dangling – word that is being modified is not in the sentence and must be added  Verb tense – all verbs must be the same tense

SAT Question of the Day #7 Upon considering the facts, the solution was obvious; consequently, Holmes sent for the police. a) Upon considering the facts b) When considering the facts c) Considering the facts d) In consideration of the facts e) When he considered the facts

A closer Look I read the other day some verses written by an eminent painter which were original and not conventional. Always the soul hears no admonition in such lines, let the subject be what it may. The sentiment they instill is of more value than any thought they may contain. To believe your thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, -- that is genius.  Be confident in your thoughts.

A Closer Look Familiar as the voice of the mind is to each, the highest merit we ascribe to Moses, Plato, and Milton is that they set at naught books and traditions, and spoke not what men, but what they thought. A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the luster of the firmament of bards and sages.  Follow your own ideas instead of listening and relying on others.

A Closer Look There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide ; that he must take himself for the better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till.  Imitating others destroys a person’s individuality. Compares the benefits of farming one’s own land with the benefits of individualism

A Closer Look The eye was placed where one ray should fall, that it might testify of that particular ray. Bravely let him speak the utmost syllable of his confession. We but half express ourselves and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents.  We are too modest and timid to trust and express our God-given ideas.

A Closer Look Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine Providence has found for you; the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events. Great men have always done so and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age, betraying their perception that the Eternal was stirring at their heart, working through their hands, predominating in all their being.  Men who have trusted their own intuition have found power.

A Closer Look Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members. Society is a joint-stock company in which the members agree for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater. The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs.  Society will cause you to not want to better yourself

A Closer Look What I must do is, all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous in actual and in intellectual life, may serve fro the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder, because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it.  There will always be people who will try to tell you what to do or who to be.

Drawing Conclusions  When you draw conclusion, you produce a general statement based on a collection of details.  Word choice, figurative language, and rhetorical techniques can provide important clues.

What conclusion can you draw from these supporting details?  “Society is a joint-stock company in which the members agree for the better securing of his bread…to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater.”  “Whoso would be a man must be a non- conformist.”  “…the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”

What conclusion can you draw from these supporting details?  “…God will not have his work made manifest by cowards.”  “Accept the place the divine Providence has found for you.”  “We should aspire “to be noble clay plastic under the Almighty effort…”

What conclusion can you draw from these supporting details?  “…envy is ignorance;…imitation is suicide…”  “the eye was placed where one ray should fall, that it might testify of that particular ray.”  “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.”

Based on the class discussion, write your own “Self-Reliance” text answering the following question:  How does someone become self-reliant in today’s society? What are the steps you need to take to avoid “originality”? How do many people fail to be self-reliant in today’s society?  Be sure to explain your stance  A complete response will be between half a page to one page minimum.
