June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand and wife assassinated by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip while visiting Sarajevo

Austria- Hungary declares war on Serbia Germany declares war on France The United Kingdom declares war on Germany, after Germany invades Belgium Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia and Serbia declares war on Germany

1914 August 19th, President Woodrow Wilson announces the U.S. will remain neutral September 5th, The first battle of the Marne begins. Trench warfare begins as soldiers on both sides dig in.

1915 February 4th, Germany declares “war zone” around Great Britain, essentially effecting submarine blockades where even neutral merchant vessels were potential targets. February 19th, The Dardanelles Campaign begins April 22nd, The second Battle of Ypres begins. It is a major turning point in the battle where Germany starts to use poison gas. September 5th Tsar Nicholas the second takes control over Russia’s army.

1916 February 21st, The Battle of Verdun begins. This was the longest and bloodiest battles of the war May 31st, the Battle of Jutland, the major naval battle of the war begins July 1st, The Battle of the Somme begins. Tanks are first introduced in this battle.

1917 January 19th, Germany sends the secret Zimmerman Telegram, that in turn pulls Mexico into the war. April 6th, The United States Declares war on Germany December 17th, The armistice agreed between the new Russian government and the Central Powers goes into effect.

1918 January 8th, President Woodrow Wilson issues his Fourteen Points
March 3rd, Russia signs the Treaty of Brest Litovsk July 15th, The second battle of the Marne Begins November 11th, Germany signs the armistice at Compiegne, France.

1919 June 28th, The Treaty of Versailles officailyl ends the war!
