Adding & Subtracting Fractions 5.M.NF.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with denominators.

Essential questions 1.What are fractions? What do the numerator and denominator represent? 2.What are unlike denominators? How is a common denominator determined? 3.How are fractions added and subtracted? How are the final answers simplified to lowest terms? 4.What is an improper fraction? How is it converted to a mixed number? 5.What is a mixed number? How is it converted to an improper fraction?

Big ideas 1.A fraction represents a part of a whole number. 2.Fractions can be added or subtracted. 3.In order to add or subtract fractions, the fractions must have like denominators. 4.Like denominators are found by determining the LCD. 5.Answers must be reduced/simplified to lowest terms. 6.Improper fractions must be converted to mixed numbers.

Set.... Think about all the steps we have used for adding and subtracting fractions... How do we add and subtract fractions? Rally Robin with your face partner what you think.

Objective I can add fractions with unlike denominators including mixed numbers.

Adding fractions Let’s review vocabulary: numerator, denominator, equivalent fractions How do we add 1/3 + 1/2 ? We need to have common denominators. Let’s look at this a couple different ways.

Subtracting 1/2 - 1/4 Think about what this looks like... Watch me...

Note taking time Now we are going to practice adding with mixed numbers Take good notes to help you review our steps.

Mixed Numbers Step 1- write problem hamburger style and separate the whole number with a “T” chart Step 2- Look at denominators and make equivalent fractions - What is the LCM or LCD (remember whatever you do to the bottom you need to do to the top) Step 3- add fractions Step 4- add the whole number Step 5- simplify ( if improper change to mixed number and add back with whole number)

Watch me 2 1/4 + 3 1/2 = Watch me with our steps.

Your Turn 2 1/3 + 1 1/4 = With your partner steps to solve.

You Do 6 1/4 + 2 1/6

You do 3 1/4 + 1 1/2 =

Closure Repeat today’s objective Work as a team to write the steps for adding fractions as mixed numbers. Each person writes one step then passes the slate until all steps are written. Share out

Brain pop Let’s learn more about mixed numbers http://www.brainpop.com/math/numbers andoperations/mixednumbers/ http://www.brainpop.com/math/numbers andoperations/mixednumbers/
