Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers Objective: Learn to add and subtract mixed numbers.
2
To add and subtract mixed numbers: Example 2: 7 4 9 + 10 2 9______ Steps: 1. First add or subtract the fractions. 2. If necessary, change them using the Least common denominator (LCD). 3. Then add or subtract the whole numbers. 4. Simplify if necessary. Example 1: 5 6 7 - 3 1 2___
3
Borrowing: When subtracting fractions, if the numerator in the first fraction is smaller than the second fraction’s numerator, you will have to borrow. When borrowing you have to take one away from the whole number. Then you will add the same amount in the denominator to the numerator. Then you may subtract normally. For Example: 9 1 5 - 4 3 4______ 8 - 3 2 5___
4
Examples: 8 5 + 6 2 1 4_____ 7 _ 3 2 8 5 1 4 - 1 3 5_____

Homework: Add or Subtract. Simplify. 1) 2 1 9 + 7 4 9_______ 2) 9 4 5 + 2 3 10_______ 3) 11 3 4 - 4 1 3______ 4 ) 5 3 10 _ 1 3 4______ 5) 24 - 8 3 4______ 6) 16 - 5 5 6_______ 7) 5 1 5 + 2 3 10_____ 8) 6 1 3 - 2 3 5_____ 9)7 3 4 + 2 2 3_______ 10) 8 3 4 + 6 2 5_____
