THEME 1-LOCATION Location-Where we are. Absolute Location-A latitude and longitude (global) or a street address (local). Relative Location-Described by landmarks, time, direction, or distance from one place to another. What is our absolute location? What is our relative location?

THEME 1-LOCATION Absolute Location: (global) 39 degrees North latitude, 75 degrees West longitude (local) 500 Ellis Ln, West Chester, PA, 19380 Relative Location: Next to East, 15 minutes from Downingtown, west of New Jersey, 25 miles from Philadelphia, etc.

THEME 2-PLACE Place-The physical or human characteristics of a location. Examples of Places:

THEME 2-PLACE Task: With a partner, develop a list of 10 places. 5 should be physical places. 5 should be human places.

THEME 3-REGION Region-An area of places with similar characteristics. The characteristics can be physical or human. Formal Region-Defined by an official boundary. Examples-West Chester, the United States, Chester County, the Chesapeake Bay. Functional Region-Defined by a purpose or function. Examples-A paper route, a school district. Vernacular Region-Described as and understood as a region. Examples-The South, Western Europe.

THEME 3-REGION What are some regions of our school? Highlight and name different regions on your map.

THEME 4-MOVEMENT Movement-The travel of people, goods, and ideas from one location to another.

THEME 4-MOVEMENT Make a list of things that move in a school. Think of as many as you can in 5 minutes.

TASK Watch film clip: “Greatest Cities of the World: New York City”. Make a list of ten things that move in New York City.

THEME 5-HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION Human Environment Interaction-How people affect the environment, and how the environment affects people. What are some examples of HEI you can think of?
