3 U.S. Government  Three branches: Legislative, Judicial, and Executive  Legislative branch(Congress) is the Senate and the House of Representatives

4 U.S. Capitol Building  The south wing (facing the building, the wing on the right) houses the U.S. House of Representatives.  The north wing (to the left) houses the U.S. Senate. LL ocation: District of Columbia, United States.

5  There are 100 Senators in the Senate. The Senate  Each state has 2 Senators.  A Senator can serve for 6 years.

6 House of Representatives  There are 435 Representatives in Congress.  The number of Representatives a state can have is based on their population.

7 Power of the Senate  The Constitution gives the Senate the power to approve, treaties made by the executive branch by a two-thirds vote.

8 Powers of the House of Representatives  The Constitution grants the House several exclusive powers: the power to initiate revenue bills, to impeach officials, and to elect the President in case of an Electoral College deadlock.

9 Committees in Congress The Senate The House of Representatives  Has 20 committees, 68 subcommittees, and 4 joint committees  Pensions  Homeland Security jjudiciary TThe House of Representatives currently has 20 standing committees and three special committees.  Agriculture AAppropriations  Education and Labor

10 Powers given to the Congress by the Constitution  To borrow Money on the credit of the United States.  To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes.  To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures.

11 Passing a Bill  Legislation is Introduced( House/Senate) - Any member can introduce a piece of legislation  Senates votes on it then it passes to the House and vise versa  To pass a vote in the Senate you would need 51 yeas. In the House of Representatives you would need 50% + 1 yeas.
