This is an illustration from William Harrison Ainsworth’s novel Rookwood, written in 1834. Dick Turpin was one of the leading characters in the novel. This shows the scene in the novel where Turpin escapes on Black Bess. Although most of the novel was not about Turpin it was the bit that appealed most to readers rather than any of the rest of the work.
