What is the Food Pyramid? The Food Pyramid tells us what we should or should not eat to help keep our bodies healthy! The 6 parts of the Food Pyramid are: Grains Grains Fruits Fruits Vegetables Vegetables Dairy Dairy Protein Protein Fats/Sweets Fats/Sweets

What Do the Colors Mean? Grains = Orange Vegetables = Green Red = Fruit Dairy = Blue Purple = Protein

Grains Grains can include breads, pasta, crackers, and rice. Whole grains are better for you Children should eat anywhere from 2.5 ounces to 5 ounces daily. Grains give you energy to learn and play.

Fruits There are a lot of fruits! Some examples are apples, grapes, bananas, oranges, and berries. Children should eat around 1 ½ cups of fruit daily. Fruits have vitamins and minerals that help the body fight off germs.

Vegetables Corn, carrots, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and peas are all vegetables. You should eat about 1 ½ cups of vegetables a day Vegetables help keep your body from getting sick. They also help your heart stay strong.

Dairy Dairy can be found in yogurt, milk, cheese, and ice cream. 2 ½ cups is what you should be eating a day. Dairy keeps your bones and teeth strong. It also helps keep your heart beating strong.

Protein Some example of Proteins are fish, eggs, meat, some types of beans, and nuts. Children should eat 4 ounces of protein a day! Proteins help build healthy bones, muscles, skin, and bones.

Sugars/Fats Sugars and fats are ‘sometimes treats.’ They can be eaten every once in a while, but eating a lot of sugars and fats won’t keep your body strong and healthy. Examples of sugars and fats are cookies, cake, ice cream, donuts, and pizza. These treats don’t have a lot of things that keep your body healthy.

Exercise Exercising is a great way to keep your body strong and healthy. Some activities you can do are: Soccer Basketball Running Riding a bike Swimming Swinging Jump-roping

Assignment I am always looking for new way to eat healthy but I’m going to need your help! I want to know what your favorite foods are and why they are healthy. Here’s what your assignment will include. Find a digital camera and take a picture of your healthy food. You will then show it to the class and explain to your classmates why it is so healthy. Have an adult help you locate the recipe to your favorite healthy food and bring it to class. After I get your recipes back, I will make a cook book for you to take home.
