SWOTT Presentation April 8, 2011

our fanta STIC team  Technology Coordinating Team (TCT) – Jon Storslee  Direct Instructional Liaisons (DIL) – Patti Marsh  Online Learning Committee (OLC) – Jim Patterson  Center for Distance Learning (CDL) – Sheri Bakunowski  Web Advisory Committee (WAC) – Mary Lou Mosley and Paul Golisch

Mission and Role MISSION: The purpose of the Technology STIC is to develop and communicate a comprehensive SWOTT analysis summarizing environmental and organizational factors that impact the quality and direction of technology use, integration, innovation, collaboration, and support at PVCC. ROLE: The team will focus on internal and external trends through a comprehensive environmental scan. Internal factors will be monitored with effective and meaningful institutional data as well as feedback and input from stakeholders.

STRENGTHS – common themes  Competent, centralized IT staff  Outstanding support for faculty and students  Excellent collaboration and communication among faculty and IT staff (e.g. OHCS)  Technology enhanced environment (in and out of the classroom)  Solid processes in place from proposal => implementation => training => maintenance  Systematic planning and budgeting

STRENGTHS - others  Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) has a talented team in a comprehensive new facility  Center for Distance Learning (CDL) supports distance learning Choices  Many online and hybrid courses are archived  Planned expansion of distance courses  Increasing support and training for faculty, including opportunities designed for adjunct faculty.

WEAKNESSES– common themes  Number of IT staff has not kept pace with the increasing number of students as well as expanded facilities and use of technology  Funding is limited for software, training, etc.  Minimal incentives for adjunct faculty to participate in training and integrate technology in their courses  Inconsistent communication with adjunct faculty regarding technology resources at PVCC

WEAKNESSES - others  Reliance on Bond funds  Student confusion Choices - what are they? Assistance – where can they get help? Skills - lack of student understanding of expectations  Distance Learning has limited support and role at PVCC  Student completion and attrition rates for distance learning courses are a challenge  Only a small number of qualified distance learning proposals have been submitted lately (see next slide)

Approved Online and Hybrid Course Proposals

OPPORTUNITIES – common themes  MCCCD Technology Plan – One Maricopa  Open Educational Resources (OER)  Grant money, partnerships  New technologies – virtual classrooms, mobile devices, virtualized applications, etc.  Increased articulation with universities  High school graduates more comfortable with technology (online classes, Google Docs, social media)  Increasing tuition at universities

OPPORTUNITIES - others  Learning Management System RFP  External contracts such as Navy Online  Expanding use of technology by faculty

THREATS – common themes  Reduced funding  Competition from other colleges and universities  Quality adjunct instructors are difficult to find and retain  Potential standardization across MCCCD

THREATS - others  Rapidly changing technologies have higher requirements -- bandwidth, expertise, etc  Blackboard issues  More opportunities for IT staff to leave the college as the economy improves

TRENDS  Mobile computing  Open Educational Resources  Virtual classrooms  Virtual applications (e.g. MySCC)  Increasing demand for online courses  Increasing familiarity with online courses  Reliance on technology to decrease the need for staff

FIVE WAYS TO SPEND $10 MILLION  Life without Bond  Fund faculty to develop and integrate technology into their instruction -- such as Open Educational Resources (OER), iPads, eBooks, mobile devices, etc.  Fund the development and support of enough online and hybrid courses to meet the demand  Provide financial rewards for innovations that are collaboratively developed and increase student success  Bonuses for Technology STIC members (just wondered if you were still reading this …)

QUESTIONS?? THANK YOU
