Cooling Systems Purpose: to keep the engine at it’s most efficient operating temperature TOO HOT! TOO COLD! - poor lubrication - excessive heat - seizing - poor fuel economy - poor lubrication - power loss - poor fuel economy
2
Cooling Systems Types Air CooledLiquid Cooled Heat of Combustion = Surrounding metal = Passing Air Heat of Combustion = Surrounding metal = Passing Coolant = Coolant removed = Metal of Radiator = Passing Air

Antifreeze (Ethylene Glycol) Prevents Freezing by lowering the freezing temperature: - can cause cracking of the block and head - very rapid over heating due to no flow Prevents Overheating by raising the boiling temperature: - can cause severe engine damage - cylinder head warping - cracking of the block and head Also contains other chemicals: - water pump lubricants - corrosion inhibitors - leak agents - foam inhibitors
6
Cooling System Service Antifreeze strength: System Maintenance -visual inspection - strength testing - PH levels - pressure testing - replace hoses etc 4-5 yrs - replace antifreeze 2-3 yrs Replace Antifreeze: -every 2 – 3 years, due to contamination and added chemical determination “The process”
