Aims and Objective This study investigates the expression of ethnic cultural activities on Palembang’s riverside urban structure from 1700s to 2000s By Understanding the cultures of Chinese, Arabian and Native Malay-Palembang in perspective of their daily activities; Investigating how the living environments accommodate the activities; Differentiating the physical spatial order of riverside settlement between the three ethnics

Cultural Diversity at Musi Riverside Palembang was developed into a big maritime port that gained advantages by its inner position in Sumatera Island Besides the native Malay, many other foreigner came and stayed in Palembang since the era of pre Sriwijaya.

The Native Malay Melayu Palembang Community – The Demak refugee socialized with genuine Malay people and form a new community known as Melayu Palembang – It was founded by the Ki Gde Ing Suro Tuo (1552-1573) and appoint him became the leader and built a new Palace (keraton), known as Kuto Gawang – His successor, Ki Gde Ing Suro Mudo then heir his position to Ki Mas Hindi or Sultan Susunan Abdurrahman 1659- 1706. – In Abdurahman era, proclaimed Palembang status of free from the influence of Mataram Kingdom in Java, and declared a new power, Palembang Darussalam Sultanate, He was the first Sultan.

The Chinese Chinese Palembang Community – came to Palembang since the 7 th century, resulted from the relationship between the two empires (Chinese and Sriwijaya) in economic and culture co-operation. – stay and married the locals and built up Chinese community in Palembang

The Arabian Arabian Palembang Community – Came to Palembang as sailors, traders and religious teachers in the same time. – In the Sultanate Era, they had special position as sultanate religious advisor, so they had right to stay on land – Philosophy “kitab and nisan”, adapt to the new place without leaving Islamic philosophy whenever you go far from the homeland, there are only two things to bring along, the kitab and nisan

Conclusion The dynamic of Palembang urban culture comes from the process of cultural acculturation between ethnic, by: – Applying re-adaption on geographical condition, – Reflecting the social culture in the living environment. Each ethnic express their social culture on living environment in various ways There are two factors influencing the cultural expression of three ethnics on the living environment: social cultural value and transportation network change. These expressions are reflected in form of physical form, building spatial order, open space and accessibility
