1 EQ: What are the motions, composition, and characteristics of the ocean that determine its vitality? By using various science process skills and different learning modalities ywbat: Describe the ocean’s motions – waves and currents; Recognize the composition of sea water; Demonstrate knowledge of how temperature and salinity affect the density of water; Describe the features of the ocean floor, and Describe the relationship between the three major groups of ocean organisms. 3 Waves LINKLINK Waves LINKLINK As you have already discovered waves are primarily caused by wind (fetch area). Is there anything else that could cause waves? Are tides and waves the same thing? Why or why not? Types of waves As you have already discovered waves are primarily caused by wind (fetch area). Is there anything else that could cause waves? Are tides and waves the same thing? 4 Currents Ocean currents are “streams” of water within the larger water body of the ocean. They are caused by wind patterns (Coriolis Effect) and changes in density (salinity and temperature). There were two other things mentioned on your ocean voyage - what were they? Surface and Deep Ocean Currents N. Hemisphere = clockwise S. Hemisphere = counterclockwise Ocean currents are “streams” of water within the larger water body of the ocean. 6 Topography of the Ocean Floor The ocean floor has higher mountains, deeper canyons, and larger, flatter plains than the continents. Learn More The ocean floor has higher mountains, deeper canyons, and larger, flatter plains than the continents. Learn More
