Vigilance in our continuous R&D on sensor technology
Continuous R&D investments in key sensor technologies 1970’s 1980’s 1990’s 2000’s Analog Analog Analog Digital P10 E10 YOKOGAWA UNI⊿ Force Balance Capacitance Piezoresistive Silicone Resonant YA11 DPharp EJ DPharp EJA DPharp EJX The word of “Vigilance” is the uniqueness of business behavior. This is the differentiating point from our competitors. While other companies stopped innovating their key sensors, Yokogawa has kept innovating. Today our EJA/EJX family transmitters feature the world’s only fully digital silicon resonant sensor that innately enable stable and accurate pressure measurement. However, during the development period, there happens many things that can not seen clearly, not known in advance and also not acted with agility. Only those who could cope with these things can achieve the target. Here is one story on our Vigilant Spirit. It was 1984 when two engineers started the research work for the new differential pressure sensor technology. In those days, the main stream technology was metal capacitance and piezo resistive sensor. However, in order to make innovation happen, the two engineers were pursuing totally different technology for their new DP sensor. COMPANY ‘A’ Analog Analog COMPANY ‘B’ Analog Yokogawa Field Solution

Vigilance -- New DP transmitter sensor development
Micro Machining as production Mechanical Resonant Sensor <DIGITAL SENSOR> Silicon Resonant Sensor <DIGITAL SENSOR> Mechanical Process Metal Material Barometer Silicon as material Since 1975, Yokogawa had been developing Mechanical resonant pressure sensor. The pressure sensor was marketed as the precise barometer for the aero industry and the meteorological industry and its high accuracy and high stability had been well accepted by those industries. Based on this experience, our engineers decided on three R&D policies for the new DP sensor, namely. Number one (1). To adopt the resonant principle, in order take advantage of high sensitivity and merit without A/D conversion. Number two (2). To use Silicon as material, in order take advantage of high stability. And Number three (3), to adopt Micro Machining technology, which was just introduced as the most advanced technology. They started the development work in July, 1986, and the first silicon resonant sensor worked at the laboratory in February, 1987. Yokogawa Field Solution

Vigilance -- Introduction of the latest technologies
Construction of Silicon Resonator by Electron Microscope Shell Resonator Semiconductor Technology An-isotropic Etching of Silicon Nuclear Fusion Technology Vacuum-Sealed Resonator (Sealed in Hydrogen, Heat Treated in Nitrogen) The sensor chip and Resonators are fabricated using single-crystal silicon in the micro vacuum cavity. These are manufactured by three-dimensional micro machining techniques. The most challenging process was vacuum sealing process. Without this process, the resonator would never resonate. At first, there was no idea about this procedure, however one day, one young engineer had an idea to use the special technology introduced from nuclear fusion engineering. This technology was quite new to IA companies like Yokogawa at that moment. After almost never-ending-experiments, the project finally established the firm processing procedure. Vigilance -- Superiority of silicon resonant sensor
High Sensitivity (Gauge Factor) Wide Range Ability Small Hysteresis No A/D Converter (Frequency Output) High Accuracy Strong to Environmental Change Small Temperature Effect Small Static Pressure Effect Long Term Stability Input Output Characteristics M capsule kPa( inH2O) 0.08 0.06 Superiority of Silicon Resonant Sensor comes from material itself and resonant principle. The output is the natural frequency and the Frequency is determined only by physical dimensions and mechanical constants, say Young‘s modulus, density and so on. These are invariable in principle and High Accuracy and high stability are realized. Comparing with other principle, resonant principle can enjoy higher sensitivity or gauge factor so that wide range ability can be realized. Also we do not need to use A/D converter, which often gives us a lot of limitation on accuracy and stability. On this slide, the left side graph shows long term stability of our silicon resonant sensor. And the right side graph shows high accuracy of the EJX series transmitter. 0.04 0.02 Error % 0.00 -0.02 -0.04 -0.06 -0.08 Long-term Stability Data for Sensor Module 20 40 60 80 100 Input % Yokogawa Field Solution

In 1995, Yokogawa had only 5% of global market share. At those days, we were of course very strong in the Japanese market and had a large market share in Asia as well. However we had just started to sell our pressure transmitters in other regions. With successful experience with the EJA series, we increased our market share from 5% in 1995 to 11.6% in 2000, then 15% in In 2004, ARC report says Yokogawa could secure more than 21% of market share. Our Target of next year, 2006, is to increase up to 30% worldwide. We believe that we are very close to achieving this target. Why have we been growing so rapidly? We believe that our continuous effort on R&D investment to improve our existing products and also to market new products based on new technologies is being accepted by our customers and also our capability to offer total solutions is being recognized as quite beneficial by our customers. Total solutions and life-cycle services
Example of MAC/MIV services EJA digital pressure transmitters Rotamass mass flow meters CENTUM DCS including network design engineering ProSafe safety management system Plant Resource Manager (PRM) YTA temperature transmitters Exaquantum (PIMS) including OPC station Buy-out item including system integration Commissioning & Start-up Maintenance activities for all instrument system including buy-out items The first value proposition is delivering total solutions and life-cycle services. Instead of showing you a laundry list of our deliverables, let me simply share one show case that exemplifies Yokogawa total solutions. A major Dutch gas company called NAM supplies natural gas to a wide area of Europe. With the natural lift of the gas field declining, NAM is currently undertaking a huge renovation project. Revamping their 29 geographically dispersed gas production clusters one by one, the project takes more than a decade to complete. The automation partner for this project must be able to supply the entire scope of instrumentation as the Main Instrumentation Vendor (MIV), from field instruments to DCS (Distributed Control System), safety systems, plant information management systems, and all the integration engineering including third-party products. Furthermore the customer was looking for a Main Automation Contractor level of services, helping them to plan and design innovative solutions for unmanned remote operations. NAM selected Yokogawa for this ambitious project, not only because Yokogawa has the technology and expertise to meet their requirements today, but also because the customer has come to have faith in Yokogawa to deliver future-proof solutions and life-cycle services that ensure ongoing evolution of their production system. SEE CLEARY : Less blind spots
See process value on-line with fewer devices with low installation cost and low maintenance cost No longer required DP + SP Temp. Sensor EJX /MV Mass Flow Output Multi sensing (DP,SP, Temp, Density) EJX reduce your maintenance effort You only maintain 1 transmitter, not 2 or 3 Our latest digital transmitter, EJX, single-handedly measures differential pressure and static pressure. In typical flow and level applications, that means you can do away with one pressure transmitter. Furthermore, the multivariable version of EJX with a temperature sensor enables flexible and cost-effective mass flow measurement. If you have processes where mass flow measurement is ideal but so far volumetric flow has been used as a surrogate measure due to cost/benefit limitations, EJX MV will help improve the quality of your production by delivering an accurate, stable, and affordable mass flow solution.
