WELCOME TO THE PTA MEETING March 4 th 2010

INTRODUCTION My name is Christine and I am: Homeroom to class 204. Math and Science teacher to class 203. Science Teacher to class C, D1, and D2 ART Teacher to 303 and 403.

I come from United States. Specifically the State of California. My goal is for the children to enjoy speaking English, build vocabulary, and enjoy reading as a doorway to learn and a new world of imagination.

GOALS FOR THIS YEAR! Get ready for 3 rd Grade Reading Fluency is a major part of Reading Comprehension Reading Fluency + Reading Comprehension = MORE VOCABULARY

GOALS FOR THIS YEAR! Science Class: Knowing vocabulary Step by step Cause and Effect Labs

GOALS FOR THIS YEAR! Math Class: WORKING WITH WORD PROBLEMS. Read directions. Read carefully. Know what the word problem is asking. Solve step by step by writing it out.

Classroom rules: 1. Be ready and on time. 2. Follow directions. 3. Speak at the right time in the right way. 4. Respect others things.

The importance of Asking Questions and Participating Discussions Asking questions helps in critical thinking. At this stage we should try to lead the children to see how they can answer their own question.

Review at home Reviewing at home does not have to be a hard task. This can be things that you do regularly. Have your child read to a little sister or brother.

Walking and sharing about the school day and what they learned. A game. Be specific when you ask questions. They will give specific answers. Use simple English at home. Also check out the 203 / 204 website for any review Powerpoint presentations.

Completing assignments and homework Homework supervision does not mean giving answers to your children. Please lead them to the answer. Teach them how to problems solve just as we teach them here to problem solve. Ask questions. “What word or part do you not understand?” This teaches them not to think “I can’t do it.” It instead focuses them to think how can I solve this problem which is a great skill for future and builds confidence.

What I think is important for students to do to succeed?

If a student: Good Attitude. “I can do it.” “OK, I did it wrong, I want to try again and see what I need to change to do it right.” “I can’t do it” attitude or “I don’t care” attitude must be changed so that eager learning can take place. No copying homework… unless teacher says its ok. Copying homework actually disrespects the child themselves and their peers. And sometimes can take away from the learning process. Then I think he or she will succeed at the school and not just the school but also succeed individually.

How can parents help the teacher? Parents communicating with the teacher in the ESL communication book. Especially signing the books to know that you have taken look at what we have done. Parents should check homework and try helping them everyday. Parents should remind students about the classroom rules and school rules and also always always listen to the teacher.

Resources Parents please use resources that I have provided into the homeroom websites. Powerpoint Presentations Educational videos from educational websites. (Bill Nye the Science Guy, Sesame Street) Please have your children go through the Power Point Presentations at least once a week.
