4. 1. Native Americans were the first people to live in the area, originally called Cahuenga (Kuwenga). 2. In the late 1700’s, the Spanish arrived and divided Cahuenga into east and west. The Spanish called the west side Rancho La Brea. 3. In 1886, a man named H.H. Wilcox bought a part of Rancho La Brea, which his wife renamed ‘Hollywood.’ 4. Later, Wilcox began to develop Rancho La Brea into a community.
