3 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: Students will learn about the basics of economics, and will learn about basic ideas, including supply and demand. Students will learn about how the economy runs, and how economics are related to cultures. Objectives: Students will be able to: Identify many important vocabulary words that deal with Economics. Identify the types of Economics, and relate them to certain cultures. Learn about the specifics of how the United States Economics runs, and how it is different or similar to other cultures. Will learn about the history of economics, and will learn how to barter.

4 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: Economics are always happening, and are the driving force that run this country. It is important that students learn at an early age how to deal with money, and important money is in driving a healthy economy. Standards : State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 15.A.1a Identify advantages and disadvantages of different ways to distribute goods and services. 15.A.1b Describe how wages/salaries can be earned in exchange for work. 15.A.2c Describe unemployment. 15.B.1 Explain why consumers must make choices. 15.B.2b Explain the relationship between the quantity of goods/services purchased and their price. 15.C.2a Describe the relationship between price and quantity supplied of a good or service. 15.C.2b Identify and explain examples of competition in the economy. 15.D.1b Know that barter is a type of exchange and that money makes exchange easier. 15.E.1 Identify goods and services provided by government. National – NCSS Themes Culture, Time community and change, Individuals groups and institutions, Power authority and governance, Production distribution and consumption.

5 Logical/Mathematical

6 Logical/Mathematical -Activity Students will be learning about the GDP, or gross domestic product. They will use the computer to find a list of the countries with the highest GDP. They will have to create a bar graph of the highest GDP’s and the lowest as well. They will be graded on how accurate they graph this data. -Resources/Materials Needed: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph /eco_gdp_percap-economy-gdp-per- capitahttp://www.nationmaster.com/graph /eco_gdp_percap-economy-gdp-per- capita A piece of paper and pencil in order to graph these two sets of data.

7 Verbal/Linguistic

8 Verbal/Linguistic -Activity Students will use the internet to look up an important vocabulary words dealing with the subject of Economics. Some of these words will include supply, demand, scarcity, and resources. The students will be required to look up these words and then create a poster of the word, with a definition and pictures relating to the word. The students will then present those posters to the class. -Resources/Materials Needed: http://html.rincondelvago.com/economic- vocabulary.htmlhttp://html.rincondelvago.com/economic- vocabulary.html A piece of poster board, pencils, pens, and markers to create their visual aid.

9 Musical/Rhythmic

10 Musical/Rhythmic -Activity Students will look at the website below, which is full of poems dealing with economics. The students will have to read one of the poems, and try to explain what the author meant when he wrote it. After they make an educated guess at the meaning of the poems, we will go over the poems together as a class. Students will be assigned one out of five of the best poems from the website. -Resources/Materials Needed: http://www.limericksecon.com/ A piece of paper, and pencil in order to write what they believe the meaning of their poem is. Also, access to the internet so or a piece of paper with the five poems already on it, so that internet access is unnecessary.

11 Visual/Spatial

12 Visual/Spatial -Activity According to the website below, there are four economic systems. The students will be broken up into groups, and be assigned one of those economic systems. They will need to research that system, and find a culture that implored that economic system. They will make a poster board explaining that culture, and how that economic system was used in that culture. -Resources/Materials Needed: http://regentsprep.org/regents/global/themes/ec onomic/index.cfmhttp://regentsprep.org/regents/global/themes/ec onomic/index.cfm A piece of poster board, pencils, pens, and markers to create their visual aid.

13 Body/Kinesthetic

14 Body/Kinesthetic -Activity Students will do an activity that will teach them what people did before the invention of currency, they will barter. They will first watch this Schoolhouse Rock video which explains what it means to barter. Each student will be required to bring in one object that they are willing to barter, and they will trade with someone else in the classroom. Then, we will have a discussion, and explain how the bartering system works, and how the use of currency made bartering obsolete. -Resources/Materials Needed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7hNOt2Y 0J8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7hNOt2Y 0J8 An object that the students will be willing to barter or trade with another student.

16 Interpersonal -Activity Students will go to the website below, and work in groups to play the game on this website. The website is a game that deals with sports and economics, and is full of interesting and accurate information about the economy. It is fun, and the students will be put into groups to play this game. They will then be asked to write a paper in their group to demonstrate what they have learned from the questions in the game. -Resources/Materials Needed: http://www.bos.frb.org/peanuts/indexnosound. htmhttp://www.bos.frb.org/peanuts/indexnosound. htm A piece of paper and pencil for the students to be able to write what they have learned from this game.

17 Intrapersonal

18 Intrapersonal -Activity After explaining the importance of money to my students, they will be shown the website below, which tells them good ways that students can earn money. They will required to write a one page response to the question of how are they going to go about earning money this summer, and what are good ways to save that money that they own? -Resources/Materials Needed: http://themint.org/kids/ways-kids-can- earn-money.htmlhttp://themint.org/kids/ways-kids-can- earn-money.html A piece of paper for and pencil for the students to write their response on.

19 Naturalistic

20 Naturalistic -Activity Something that many young students don’t realize is that natural resources are effected heavily by the economy, and they also effect the economy as well. Students will learn about how those to things happen, and will be required to read the website below in order to see how natural resources and the economy are related. We will then have a discussion to see what the students think they can do in order to fix some of the problems that occur because of this relationship. -Resources/Materials Needed: http://www.globalissues.org/issue/198/human- populationhttp://www.globalissues.org/issue/198/human- population A piece of paper to write what they are going to say in the discussion.

21 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Assessment: Much like my other lessons, each activity is going to be graded differently. One activity will require a rubric, and one will be a paper, and one could be a presentation, but it is important to assess each student equally and to let the students know what they have to do to earn full credit for each activity before it is assigned.
